“I don’t want to get too bulky” (ladies addition)

It comes with the territory I suppose.  Almost every time I talk to a girl about training, or weight lifting, I always get the classic response, “But I don’t want to get too bulky.  I LITERALLY gain like, ten pounds of muscle in ONE day.” So what do you ladies do instead?  Cardio… ALL THE TIME.

I get it. It all makes sense in your head.  The more cardio you do, the more calories you’ll burn, which will lead to all that extra fluff just shedding away.  But, what if there was a far better, much more efficient approach? Imagine this: Your workout is long over. You make it home to the couch, and your body was STILL burning calories and you don’t have to do anything.  Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

Well, lifting weights can help have this effect.  After your gym session is complete your body is still working hard to recover!  Your muscles have to heal and regenerate, which in turn makes you a calorie burning machine for hours afterwards!  And that part about getting big and bulky? Ladies please, I’m a 23 year old guy with testosterone coming out of my ear drums and I still haven’t gotten to the point where I’m big and bulky.  The only way your going to put on extra muscle is by being in a calorie surplus.   So if that’s what your worried about, let your fears of bulking go, get into a calorie deficit, and hit the weight room (read earlier posts for more info).  If your after that firm body, this is where you are going to find it.  Not on the treadmill sweating your guts out.

Quick story for you all:

My mother, (bless her soul) has been an avid gym goer ever since I can remember.  Her dedication to it is actually where I found my drive for the gym and a healthy lifestyle.  I remember going with her to all of her aerobics classes and watching her spend hours on end running her butt off on a treadmill.  The older she has gotten the more she has realized that the physique she has been chasing all her life wasn’t obtainable through hours of cardio and women’s aerobic classes.  Now don’t get me wrong, that woman is in better shape than I am and could probably still kick my butt.  Cardio is a great tool to use to get yourself into shape, but it isn’t the ONLY tool that you should be using.  She since then has picked up some dumbbells and implemented them into her routine.  Not only has this helped her burn extra calories, but also given her some definition and muscle tone in her body.  The last time I asked her how her gym life was going with the new added element, she replied, “I wish I would have been lifting weights ever since I started.”
